Nonprofit Organizations
We represent over 50 nonprofit organizations, which range from publicly supported
service organizations to sports groups to family foundations. Some nonprofit
clients (e.g., a group providing services for developmentally disabled adults)
are essentially businesses conducted in nonprofit form; others, particularly
private foundations, are estate planning vehicles for high-net-worth clients.
This practice is therefore closely related to both the business and estate
planning practices described above.
J. Christopher Toews has an extensive background in nonprofit organization
law. He reviewed the private foundation provisions of the Tax Reform Act of
1969 while an associate at the firm of Donovan Leisure Newton & Irvine
firm (New York) and advised various national public and private nonprofits
on behalf of that firm. He was a member of the California State Bar’s
Business Law Section, Nonprofit Organizations Committee for several years
and chaired the committee for its 1993-94 year. Also, he is former President
of Ad Care Inc. (now Lifespan Services Network, Inc.), a private nonprofit
group providing various senior services in San Luis Obispo County, California
and has served on various nonprofit boards and committees.
